Five FC Barcelona defenders are in the list of 20 candidates of defense for the World XI 2012

Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Dani Alves, Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano are part of a top pick in the category of defense to set the FIFA FIFPro World XI of 2012. The best team of the year will be announced on January 7 next year, the same day they also deliver the 2012 Golden Ball.

FIFA and FIFPro have released a list of 20 defenders that fight to occupy one of the four seats of the World XI 2012 on the defensive line. Among those shortlisted for the Catalans  are: Jordi Alba, Dani Alves, Javier Mascherano, Gerard Piqué and Carles Puyol. The winners will be announced on January 7, 2013, during the awards ceremony of the Golden Ball. Jordi Alba debuts while the captain Carles Puyol is a veteran of this award, as it has been collected in 2007, 2008 and 2010. In addition, last year Dani Alves and Gerard Piqué was in the FIFA FIFPro World XI in which Iniesta, Xavi and Messi were also for FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona, with five players, is the club that brings more candidates in the defense position in the World XI 2012. It is followed by Chelsea, with four, and Real Madrid, with three. The short-listed are those that have received the most votes from all professional footballers in the world.

Chelsea: Cole, David Luiz, Ivanovic and Terry.
Real Madrid: Marcelo, Pepe and Sergio Ramos.
Manchester United: Evra and Rio Ferdinand.
Tottenham: Bale.
Juventus: Chiellini.
Borussia Dortmund: Hummels.
Manchester City: Kompany.
Bayern Munich: Lahm.
Paris Saint-Germain: Thiago Silva.
